2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

The 2012 CLS-Class is a 4-door, 4-passenger luxury sedan, or luxury sports sedan, available in 3 trims, ranging from the CLS550 to the CLS63 AMG.

Upon introduction, the CLS550 is equipped with a standard 4.6-liter, V8, 402-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 24-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The CLS63 AMG is equipped with a standard 5.5-liter, V8, 518-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 15-mpg in the city and 22-mpg on the highway. A 7-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard.

the proportions remain as spectacular as ever: long hood, tightly-styled frameless side windows and a dynamic roof sweeping back at an angle towards the rear. The four-door Coupé from Mercedes-Benz immediately made its mark in 2003 as a new style icon. Though the proportions are the same, the second generation of this design trendsetter has a completely new look.
What immediately strikes the eye is the innovative front design, which is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Visually, the radiator grille is not integrated into the hood but formed separately. This further highlights the long, sporty hood. The grille is dominated by the large central star, which unites the car with other Mercedes-Benz coupés and also enhances brand identity. The large, elongated dark air inlets with black grilles also add to the vehicle’s athletic appearance.

Design brings high-tech features to life
Another distinguishing feature comes in the form of the full LED headlamps, which are the world’s first to offer all of the dynamic light functions using LED technology. This innovation boasts an impressive design – inside they are divided into three arrow-shaped layers from top to bottom: the upper layer contains an LED indicator, beneath which is a striking LED side light offers LED low beam functions. The side light can also be seen when the high beam is activated, thereby creating a unique night-time design. The lowest level of the headlamp houses the main beam and nightview functions. A total of 71 LED’s provide an unmistakable appearance as well as a significantly enhanced view of the road compared with previous systems.
The typical Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class outline, with its elegantly long proportions, is the dominating attribute of the new model. The effect of the dynamic, athletic form has been enhanced with a new interplay of lines and surfaces. A unique “dropping line”, which begins above the front wheel-wells and slopes downward towards the rear, represents a new interpretation of a renowned design hallmark of historic Mercedes sports cars.
A distinctive and muscular sports car-like shoulder line above the rear axle highlights the athletic character of the 2012 CLS. The flared wheel arches resemble the powerful thighs of a feline predator waiting to pounce.
The side profile is rounded off with wide wrap-around tail lights featuring LED technology – a linking element to the rear of the vehicle. The shape is emphasized by the broad shoulder line, which is clearly visible from behind and supports the flat roof. A wide metal insert adds a further visual highlight at the rear.

Porsche panamera 2011 diesel

The 2011 porsche panamera diesel :

Just a few months after launching the Panamera petrol hybrid, Porsche is serving up an alternative maximum efficiency GT: the Panamera Diesel. It can, says Porsche, cover 745 miles on its 80-litre tank. If you’ve got a capacious bladder, an optional 100-litre tank is set to be an option too.
The Panamera Diesel goes on sale from August 2011, and, like the hybrid, is available only in rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed Tiptronic torque converter auto, not the PDK dual-clutch transmission that’s offered on all other Panameras.

ENGINE:

Porsche Panamera diesel will have a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, 250 hp, which has 550 nm of torque at 1,750 rpm, combined with the eight-speed automatic transmission Tiptronic S. According to the German  automaker, the car which is available only with rear-wheel drive, can get 100 km/h from a standing start in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 242 km per hour. As on other 5-door of this GT the adaptive air suspension are optional extra.

FUEL EFFICIENCY: Porsche said that Panamera diesel consumes an average of 6.5 L/100 km and 172 g/km of CO2. The standard automatic start/stop if combined with low rolling resistance tires, allows better values as 6.3 L/100 km and 167 g/km. The Porsche Panamera diesel can get more than 1200 km as range. The German price is set at € 82,000 and deliveries will begin in August.

Competition :
The list of competitors for a diesel variant of the Panamera will mirror that of the standard version with the bmw 7-series and the audi a8.

BMW is rumored to be bringing a diesel 7-Series to the US market, but Europeans already benefit from the performance of models like the 740d xDrive. This model is powered by a straight six-cylinder engine that features TwinPower Turbo technology and Common Rail direct injection and delivers a total of 306 HP at 4,400 rpm and maximum torque of 442 lbs-ft is available between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. The only area the new Panamera trumps the BMW is in fuel efficiency: the BMW only gets 33 mpg.
The story follows a similar plotline with the Audi A8. There isn’t a diesel version available for the US market, but in Europe, customers can choose between a 3.0 TDI or a 4.2 TDI. The closest in performance to the Panamera Diesel is the 3.0 V6 TDI that delivers 250 HP and 405 lbs-ft. Fuel economy in the Audi pushes the envelope a bit further than the Panamera with 38 mpg compared to the Porsche’s 37mpg.

Verdict

The Panamera Diesel is, by and large, a success. The engine is smooth and willing, the economy figures appealing, and the interior is a lovely place to be. However, the general flaws of the Panamera are still present: it’s not the easiest thing to see out of (either to judge the kerb, or to reverse), the rear accommodation and boot is easily shaded by a Mercedes S-class, and in the case of the Diesel, the handling isn’t as satisfying as, say, the V8 manual.
A Cayenne is cheaper, more spacious and still a decent drive, so if you’re tempted to go for a Panamera test drive, make sure the dealer gets you in a Cayenne too. Whatever your preconceptions, you might just prefer it.
